If you haven't already read Susan's blog (the journals product manager) please do so. They have the next release in beta...one feature under consideration is an Online Presence icon that will appear beside your screen name....in your journal  as well as in other people's journals where you've left comments.    You can see how it looks/works by adding- beta. to the URL of your AOL Journal    i.e.
