Hearing The Fray: How to save a life

Fun in the sun?

Insects seem to be a major factor in the garden at the moment; if we are not being chased around by wasps, we are creeping up on photogenic Butterflies and Moths as they feed on nectar-rich flowers.

The occational rain and very warm weather has encouraged plenty of flowers out and the outdoor tomatoes are fruiting heavily. Fruits will be donated back to nature for the birds to eat but I am cutting back the lettuces to have them ready to pick again when we return.

I have dug out the irrigation system to ensure all is well when we go on holiday. The automatic controler was left out all winter and now doesn't work so I had to buy another. This will be connected to drip pipes to water all the pots while we are away. Usually they look so much better than when I do it by hand, because they get a set amount every day rather than irrigular quanities when I remember.

Pruning back the Wisteria over the archway to allow some access along the path to the office, I notice that it is starting to flower for the second time. Is this a bonus of the warm weather, or have I just never noticed before?

Isn't there a hose ban in Hertfordshire, so how do you get way with an irrigation system?  Is it that you are commercial, or can I use one in my own garden?  Presumably, it runs from an elevated reservoir, or may it be run from a mains tap direct?  If the former, may I use a hose to top-up the reservoir, whilst the ban is in force?

Advice would be most welcome, though hopefully for a future year, if we start to get some proper rain again.

I dream of having a Wisteria at the front of my house, but would have no idea how to look after it.  I notice that one on my route to work is flowering for the second time this year too.... I just look with envy as I pass... <sigh>.  To prove my gardening innocence, I have just produce my first every Dahlia, and I am so proud!  Lovely reading you... Gem
