Cyber Cruelty

I'm going to broach a subject that has crossed my path recently in the case of the VIVIs. I have closed the books on that one, and my understanding is that things are moving in the right direction again. But not without people getting hurt, and what for, for goodness' sakes?

I also understand that some in J-land get subjected to hateful comments, and I just don't understand why anybody needs to be cruel to somebody you don't know, you've never met and in all likelyhood not even spoken to on the 'phone. Or had an IM exchange with, for that matter.

At the end of the day, you're looking at somebody's writing, on your computer screen. You may not agree with it, it could conceivably offend. Fortunately, the Internet is endowed with a white cross in a red cross. If you click your mouse on it, the relevant window closes. Nobody forces you to read an Internet page, do they?

I'm probably too naive for my own good (am I? nah), but would like to ask for a bit of tolerance around the block.

Oh, before I click SAVE: I have no indication to suggest that any journalers of my acquaintance are guilty of any such practices. At the end of the day, any AOL member can cook up a screenie - or anyone on the net can make a screenie under AIM - which is used to make such comments.

Seems the world has always had some who just enjoy being cruel.  Some who don't feel tall lest they tear someone else down.  Some who are so miserable they want everyone else miserable to.  -  Barbara

so sorry to hear that it has happened again. Perhaps the best way is to just vote by giving names for you and which award we attribute to that person/blog, nothing else, so we don't have to read the messages. I have not read the votes from people; I just get to read blogs and tries to fit them into the many proposed awards, so I have not been affected by those nasty messages. There will always be some people who do like bringing a bit of chaos into some schemes, it cannot be avoided, and in fact I am surprised it does not happen more often on the net where it is so easy for people to hide behind fake names. I don't think we should pay attention too much to those trouble makers or take it personally.

I too agree 100%.  I hate the a$$holes that create names under AIM.  You can't track them when they are nasty to you or when they solicit you online for porn.  UGGHH!!

I agree Guido! 100%! I know my journal is probably one of them, and I don't know why this has happened to me as well. For someone to visit my journal and possible read it....and then now, and only now...start to email me and say such mean and nasty things! I'm apauled! I never knew the true colors of "them" until now. I know now who my true friends are because of this silly child like action, in "If you don't do or believe in/or what "I" do, then I'm scum to them and they think they can just be nothing but mean to me? No way....and it does hurt. Thank you Guido for writing about this. :o)
