Just paying a quick visit...

A recent photo of Bluebells in The English Lakes.

Hello!

Just a quick visit to say thank you to those of you who have been asking after my health recently.  Thank you too for all the lovely e-mails of concern.

I had intended on making an entry a couple of weeks ago but circumstances put paid to that.

Some of you may remember I had an elderly lady neighbour called Margaret who died nearly two years ago.  She left behind her husband Ron who is a bit of a loner and recluse and always said to me he doesn't mind his own company.  I visited him daily for months after Margaret's death to keep an eye on him to the point of becoming a pesky pest I expect!   Lol!

In the end I thought he wanted space to just be by himself so I just kept an eye on him from a distance of two doors away.  I called a few times when I noticed his curtains were not drawn back or his garage door was not open which he usually did every day.  You get to know people's routines when they live nearby.

Two weeks ago, come this Wednesday, he had an accident in his car coming out of our local supermarket.  If it was not for my noticing a policeman walking up and down past our window two or three times, as though he was looking for someone, I would never have known that they had taken Ron to the hospital.  The policeman was dropping off his groceries into the garage.  I mentioned to Bryan about the policeman and as he was setting off for a walk right then he said he would have a word with him and see what he wanted.

Imagine my shock to hear that Ron, who is 87, was in hospital and that he had had an accident.

He lives alone and his only son, whom he doesn't see eye to eye with, lives down near London.

I phoned around and eventually found him at our local hospital 13 miles away and not the 30 miles away at the Lancaster Infirmary which I was told of originally.  Thank goodness!

Off I dashed to find out that he had only had seat belt and airbag brusing to his arm and chest. (This was pretty extensive and caused him a lot of pain getting in and out of bed).

He was so glad to see me as in his shock he couldn't remember anyone's second names so that he could phone someone to come for him.  Bless him!

I brought him home and watched over him for the next few days, asking him to phone his son and let him know.  In the end I did that  as I found out he was not eating or drinking enough and I was getting concerned about him.

His son was ill but when he found out that I had made an appointment to take him to see his doctor he said he would wait and see what transpired.  He has yet to come up to see him.

I have been shopping and cooking occasionally for him and running him back to the doctors for tests etc.

It transpires that he has not been eating properly for a long time and he is now in need of vitamin B 12 injections every other day for a fortnight. Those will carry on at chosen intervals for many months depending on future blood test results.

It makes me think I should have just kept pestering him when I once called on him daily after Margaret's death.

I guess he has been napping away at odd times throughout the day and night and has got out of sync with cooking.  So I am now calling on him four or five times a day to get him back into knowing what day it is and pleading with him to eat and drink a little bit more each day.

He managed to eat some fresh salmon and new potatoes with carrots, which I made for him, at midnight the other evening he told me, so I am not quite winning the 'time battle' for him to eat properly.

Any food eaten is a bonus to me so I am happy so far.  I am told the B12 injections should boost him up and put paid to his swollen ankles and legs which are the cause of his not eating properly.  I thought that was signs of his heart not working and that's why I took him to the doctors.  It just goes to show.

Anyway...that's where I have been hiding recently.  So please don't worry about me.

All my family are coming to visit this week for the half term holidays so I doubt if I will be able to come back onto the computer until we are into June now.

Meanwhile ...stay well.   I will be back regularly once I have got Ron up and running again.

Take care..

Hello from Jeanie

Hello!

It's been a while since I entered my journal I know...

I haven't been too well for a while and I have been given some pills to lift me out of it.

Unfortunately the pills I was given to hold my breast cancer at bay, so that my body can't make the oestrogen that the cancer needs to grow, also create mood swings.  Something which was alien to me!

Oestrogen is the 'feel good factor' our body just thrives on for putting a smile on our face and a skip in our feet.  Without that boost then hot flushes apart, life can look a little bleak.  That's the price to pay for eliminating the oestrogen unforutnately.

Because I have no ovaries I unfortunately have 'crashed; since the treatment began and I have found it very difficult to deal with it.

My MacMillan nurse suggested homeopathic therapy but that was St John's Wort which can take three months to kick into your system and unfortunately my oncology surgeon does not allow me to take it as it works against my post cancer treatment.  Fortunately the homeopath would not give it to me without her agreement. So it was suggested I ask my family practitioner for a solution.

The pills (Citalopram) I have been given, affect the brain by boosting the seratonin in it. It also makes for yawning and feeling tired quite a lot.  Things are going through my head at a slower pace than before.

I asked the doctor for help but not something that would have me hooked forever so I trust that these will do the trick and have me doing the 'happy dance' again soon.

I can't complain of the sleepiness as that is a bonus when normally a regular night's sleep, since my treatment, would be two and a half hour intervals.  Then I would get up and mooch about and go back to bed a while later.  Exhaustion I suppose just had to set in.  The pills have also calmed my hot flusheds down a lot too.

For now I am taking a break from the computer and getting out and about a bit more.

This doesn't mean I wont be back again it's just me taking a little break until everything comes together again.

A little prayer would not go amiss as we all know the power of prayer.

I will pop in and out of everyone's journals when I can find the time.  Meanwhile look after yourselves and take care.

2. Each player answers questions about themselves.

3. At the end of the post the player then tags 5 people, and posts their names, goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment letting them know they've been tagged.

Questions

1. WHAT WHERE YOU DOING TEN YEARS AGO

I was still Senior Cook at a girls boarding school.

2. WHAT ARE 5 THINGS ON MY TO-DO  LIST TODAY

I would grant & fund cancer research.

I would also help the RSPCA

I would set up aand build new orphanages in Romania with central heating and with comfortable living quarters.

I would train up nurses and acquire doctors to teach those carers in the orphanages of Rumania and elsewhere how to empathise and care for the children in their charges whilst encouraging them to play and learn outside the buildings and not leave them in their cots until their legs atrophy.

I would pay for more staff so that they could give these children and young adults quality time and tutition to possibly become self sufficient in flats of their own and possibly do some kind of work for a living.

Some Spring views ...

Hello!

The above photos of Winnie the Pooh and Tigger are paintings which I did on the walls of our granchildren's bedroom.  I took them for posterity as they no longer exist.  They are too grown up for murals and such now.  Lol!

The other photos were taken yesterday on my way home from work.

The views were spectacular as I sat outside for five minutes before I came home again.  The others are of the homeward journey alongside the lake.

I'm sure you will agree the views were breathtaking and I just had to stop for a 'Photoshoot'!  Lol!

I just had to share the moment with you all.

Spring is truly here in the Lakes although the forecast for the weekend does predict some sleet or snow.   At least this week there have been a few little tempting morsels of the fine weather to come. That's enough of a carrot for me to hang on in there.

We are off up to the Borders tomorrow to visit and look after our grandchildren as Samantha has work to go to.

I hope the weather allows us to set off early tomorrow morning.

Bryan is going to hang some shelves in Ryan's room then make another one for Ryan's keyboard which he got for Christmas.

He will get pleasure in doing that.

I can't wait to see Samantha's garden as she tells me she has planted lots of flowers, bulbs and seeds.

So...if I am not paying your journal a visit you know where I am.

Have a lovely weekend.

And A Meadow Lark Sang

The child whispered, "God, speak to me." And a meadow
lark sang, but the child did not hear.

So the child yelled, "God, speak to me!" And the
thunder rolled across the sky, but the child did not
listen.

Thechild looked around and said, "God let me see you."
And a star shone brightly, but the child did not
notice.

And the child shouted, "God show me a miracle!" And a
life was born, but the child did not know.

So the child cried out in despair, "Touch me God, and
let me know you are here!" Whereupon God reached down
And touched the child.

But the child brushed the butterfly away and walked
away unknowingly.

A Day Out At Larch Cottage Penrith

My thanks to Sal for the above tag.

Well....so much for enjoying the Spring weather.  After a lovely week of sunshine and reasonable warmth in the sun, Thursday brought the winds and the rain.  The rain had turned to snow on the fell tops as I looked out my bedroom window this morning.  It blew a 'hoolie' through the night.

The result of that was a blessing of sunshine this morning.  Its so much nicer than rain.  We are to expect snow but I am thankful for this little window in the weather.

We went for a drive on Monday to a lovely garden centre called Larch Tree Cottage.  A good friend of mine found it for me and took me to visit there one early spring, as she knows how much I love my garden. She treat me to the whole day out, with lunch at the garden centre and then pudding over at Wetheriggs Potteries just down the road from the garden centre.  It was just the kind of day I needed as I recovered from my cancer treatment.  I was so amazed at the diversity of statues and ideas for the garden that I promised Bryan I would take him up there to see for himself.  That was this Monday.

It was a bit further on plant wise this time and there was obviously a lot of work going on in readiness for the Easter Weekend rush of visitors.

We had a lovely lunch there.  Tomato soup with wild rice and then a lovely plate of Foccacia bread adorned with smoked salmon and seafood, drizzled with garlic butter. The plate was dressed with a side salad tossed in balsamic vinegar.  Just my 'cup of tea'.  It reminded me of our visit to Oban in Scotland last year where we ate fresh caught fish just off the boats.  There is no comparison between frozen and fresh.  I could eat it every day and not get fed up with it.   Maybe I should have been a dolphin.  hahahaha!

Anyway...I digress.  We had a good walk around, even though the wind was bitterly cold.  From there we went to Wetheriggs Pottery but got disappointed as it has been sold and is in the process of being taken over.  There were no potters or glass blowers plying their craft and only one residentartist working at his easel so I was disappointed not to be able to show Bryan what I saw.

This site holds the first steam driven pottery museum which was closed. What a shame.

There should have been signs to stop folks from travelling all the way just to find nothing much there.

Not deterred however, we drove home over the moors and almost into Kirkby Stephen.  I wanted to head for Tebay where there was a chocolate factory...but we missed it and ended up wending our way home through the Tebay Gorge entering Kendal, the Gateway to the Lakes, from that direction.

The photos above will give you some idea of what we saw on our day out.  Enjoy!

Feeling Happy

A Sunday tootle around the district...

Happy St Patricks Day Everyone!

I mentioned in my last entry that it was Bryan's 70th birthday yeseterday. My thanks to those who sent him good wishes.

Had he been born today his mother, I am told, was going to call him Patrick.   Just a little bit of useless information.   lol!  .

Unfortunately we weren't able to go Ten Pin Bowling at Morecambe as both Samantha and my grandson Ryan were poorly.  They are both suffering from  a chesty cough that seems quite vampirical as it wants to do its worst at night.  It is accompanied by an excrutiating headache as well as being sick from coughing so much.   So it was thought best to steer clear of Grandma and Granddad whilst they were brewing it.   I agreed.

Samantha tells me she has been getting all B Grades at University which is equivalent to a 2:1 Degree if she keeps up this consistency.  I am so chuffed for her as it is no mean feat running a home, and a little weekend job into the bargain, as well as studying for her Maths Teaching Degree.  I'm not surprised she is run down, as all her work gets done once the children are in bed so she burns the midnight oil regularly.  I am so proud of her.

I know she reads my journal as she says she only really finds out how I feel and think through reading it.  So I want her to read how truly proud I am of her determination to become a teacher.

As for their next visit... not to worry.   If they are well enough they are coming to stay for Easter .   We can all go and celebrate then.

Mind you..we are due heavy frosts and possible snow, so that could put the cat amongst the pigeons.

Instead of bowling...Bryan and I went for a lovely long walk around the area behind our house and  beyond.  It was a cold day but lovely in the sunshine.  You will see by the photos above that it was a lovely change from the high winds and rains we have had for what seemed forever this past month or so.

We strolled, stopping and chatting with the odd local or two whom we met.  I took my usual photos as we steered a different route for a change. This would shorten the walk for me and cut out the steeper hills Bryan said.  My husband thinks of everything as my 'old lungs' were protesting from their inactivity over our long winter.  I usually catch my breath by stopping for a photoshoot.  As you can see there were many stops.   I forgot to take my ventolin with me.   Twit that I am!

At one point we bumped into my old doctor, Dr McGregor.  He has been retired for a very long time.  I remember asking him what he planned to do in his retirement and he said he was going to take up his violin again.   So I asked him on Sunday if  he was still playing and yes he was!

This apart, at ninety one he was still fell walking and had entertained five friends for the weekend.  We were told he had already got one wash out and dried in the sunshine and was away home to bring in the second washing.  How's that for independence at 91?    It was nice to see him as fit as a fiddle still.  On parting he said there's hope for us to live as long and as fit as him.  Bless him!  I think the secret is to still stay active and keep on the move.

I apologise for not adding information to the photos above but AOL is sorely trying me these days.  It is taking so long to open them to edit I have just given up.  At least the photos are there for you all to see.

Meanwhile...

Sharing 'Oh Danny Boy 'Lyrics with you...I just love this song.  I love to sing it out loud in the car when I am on my own and where nobody can hear me hit the duff notes.   Lol!

             'Oh Danny Boy'

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me
I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.
                 ***************
Well...enough of my prattling...hope you had a happy St Patricks Day.
We had a great day out where I took some more lovely photos.
I will keep those for my next entry.

AOL has been slow at downloading my web pages lately
so I have become frustrated and given up sometimes when I have
tried to catch up on reading everyone else's journals. Hopefully I will be
along to visit soon.
Hugs
Jeanie xx

Feeling Happy

A Spring walk in the Lakes.

My thanks to Sal for this lovely tag.

Hello!

Today I managed my first long walk around the block since the beginning of winter.  It was boggy underfoot in the fields. There were a couple of times when I was doing the 'Bambi On Ice' scene...only this was on mud.  Lol!  It was real quagmire stuff in places but well worth the effort as you will see in my album above.

I can't believe how I am sleeping! I have more energy since I began to take my diabetic pills.  What a difference there is in my sleep patterns.  I had been accepting short sleeps of two and a half hours as normal since my cancer treatment began and finished.  Its not worth stressing yourself about lack of it I found.  Just get up and do something until your tired again and accept it was my motto.  Now...wahaaaay!  I only waken up once a night and can go straight back to sleep. I did the other morning until ten thirty.  I have never done that for years!

So...I'm full of vim and verve again.  I hope it isn't a fluke and that this new energy is here to stay.  I look forward to getting out and about more.

I wasn't even breathless....magic!  I feel normal at long last!

No more tiredenss or fuggy head.

Well...as you can see in the photos above, the day was a grey one but it was very mild and not a bit cold.  Even though there is snow on the fell tops.

I sat at the top of Biskey Howe, the vantage point where you get to see a good bit of the lake and fell tops, and noticed how smokey grey the clouds were.

I called these days Maurice Crawshaw days when I worked in the Art Gallery here in the village.   We had a very talented artist called Maurice Crawshaw, who revived the technique of creating pictures from candlesmoke.  Just as the Victorian children once did on old plates by using the soot off the candles to blacken the plate and gently liftoff the soot to create a black and white picture.  Maurice excelled at this and only he knew how to seal the soot and trap it for posterity inside a glass sealed frame.  He designed pendants and earrings as well as brooches with his unique pictures inside them.

His usual ones are of a shepherd with his dog on the fells or of climbers or lakeland cottages with the shepherd walking home up the lane etc.

They are quite magical and mysterious pictures.  Yes....made from real blackened soot from candlesmoke. Amazing!  He would use various implements to remove the soot to leave behind the picture on the glass which had a grey/white background.  Just like a reverse negative in a way.  I wish I could show you one of them but they are originals and they are never shown on the gallery web site.

Since I made this entry it was brought to my attention by Julie of MidWestVintage  that Maurice does have a web address.   so if you are interested in seeing his work here is the link.

One other thing I would like to add is that when I spoke with him on the phone he was such a happy funny man.  He had laughter in his voice and I was told he was just the same when you meet him, which I never did before I left the gallery.  Which was a shame.

http://www.mauricecrawshaw.com/index.htm

Thanks Julie

Anyway....one day I will have a little shot at trying it for myself. I can just see the Victorian children on rainy Sundays after church, sitting their children down in the parlour to create pictures without the need of paper.  If they made a mistake they could easily hold it over the candle and begin again.  Now that would be a good way of leaving a green footprint in stead of using paper nowadays.  Yes?

Well ..must go for now as tea is almost ready.

It's Bryan's 70th birthday on Sunday and I have decided that we will all go to the Superbowl at Morecambe to enjoy a game of bowling and then have a meal afterwards.  Bryan doesn't want a fuss and just wants it to be like any other day but HEY!  Whose going to listen to him, old misery guts. Lol!

He's never been ten pin bowling so this will be a fun time.  NO doubt he will come home boasting of how expert he is....lol!   I  know him so well.

It's meant to be a decent weekend after all the gale force winds and rotten weather we have had lately so roll on the weekend.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend too.

God Bless

Jeanie xxx

Sybils' Visit

My thanks to Sal for the lovely Tag above.

Morning!

This last week has been quite a busy one and a happy one too.

Sybil of  http://journals.aol.co.uk/sybilsybil45/villagelife  came to visit with me for an hour last  Tuesday.

It turned out to be a lovely day weather -wise as we had snow the previous day which was quite a worry.

Sybil fulfilled all my expectations and more.  She is a lovely friend and I only wished she had been able to stay longer so that we could have 'blethered' some more.

Sybil's sister Sarah and her husband John were travelling with her and it was lovely to meet with them too. Now I know whose who when Sybil next writes of them in her journal.   Sarah tells me she reads my journal and we laughed at her being called a 'lurker'.   lol!

I could have kidnapped and kept Sybil  here forever!   I know we would have both been talking 'til the cows came home.  Lol!

A quick reconoitre of our humble abode, the garden and Bryan's pond, with some tea and scones thrown in to the mix, and she was out the door again like a puff from a magician's wand.

And luckily for her...without a loaf of wholemeal bread which 'His Majesty' 'The Master Baker' made for her.  She lives to write another day!  hahahaha!

Not long enough for me but 'good enough for now.  Next time will be longer I'm sure.

They set off for Scotland from here to go up and over Kirkstone Pass a route I once regularly used to go to Samantha's.  It takes you through spectacular scenery with disappearing glimpses of Windermere as you climb higher and higher to the top of the Pass.  Mile wise it is quicker but because it is a popular tourist route it can have coaches and lots of tourists crawling up it so it can take much loner to get to your destination if you are aiming for the motorway at Pentrith.

Once at the top there is a panoramic view of Brothers Water.  This is a square shaped lake where folklore says two brother's once drowned there, hence the name. As you descend and travel the twisting narrow roads towards Glenridding, the area where Wordsworth was said to have written his famous poem Daffodils, you can see glimpses of the Roman Road on your left.

The Roman's had many forts in the Lakes and used the top of the fells as 'High Streets', (clever Romans) to get from place to place quicker.  Once down through these serpentine roads,  Ulswater (click on the link) opens up into view and has many passing places where you can stop to admire the scenery or picnic.

So if you have been able to spend a while following the links I have provided above, then you will see what Sybil saw en-route to visit with her dear friend Jane in Scotland.

I'm sure Sybil, along with Sarah and John had their breath taken away with the views as the evening drew closer on their journey.

                                       *******

As for my surgery appointments, again all of my bloods were fine, apart from my sugars. From Monday I have to begin a regime of taking pills for my diabetes.  I'm hoping the tiredness I have been feeling for months will go, and will give me back my 'thinking brain' again. I have been fighting sleep most days after very little exertion sometimes.

Moans over...there is a solution to everything and mine begins Monday.

                                ******************

The photos in my album are not brilliant sadly...

I never thought to check the settings when I handed the camera to John to take a photo of me and Sybil.   They are rather dark but.. I am not phased.. as I know sybil's sister Sarah took quite a few whilst we chatted away. I know those will be on Sybil's journal once she returns home and gets settled in front of the computer again.

Meanwhile...have a lovely weekend.  We have to expect quite severe storms on Monday and its to build up over the weekend.  So... its time to batten down the hatches here in the Lakes.

Must go and let Bryan know I am still alive....lol!

God Bless.

Jeanie xx

Feeling Happy

Turning off my alerts for a week or so...

Morning!

I'm just dropping in to say that I am taking a break from the computer.

I have my daughter and grandchildren coming this weekend.

Then I have Sybil popping in for a cuppa on Tuesday, next week possibly.  I'm really looking forward to meeting up with her.

Wednesday I have nurse and doctors appointments at different times throughout the day, just MOT ones, and Thursday I have work.  I am usually quite tired for a few days after I have been to work, but I love going so much it makes up for it.

I will keep Guido's alerts open as he always watches out for us all and I know if anybody needs a helping hand or a prayer or two he will flag it up.  I will be right along as quickly as I can.

Meanwhile.. As it is the 1st of March and St David's Day here in Britain. Here is a link of interest kindly given to me by my friend Sal from her Wonderful Things List..Wonderful Things- Please send me a disclaimer- I'd like to join your list!

Georgia Welsh Society: St David's Day

Have a lovely weekend.  And to those of you celbrating Mother's Day this Sunday...have a lovely day.

Another lovely browse for you below if you have time...taken from Sal's Sends again.

Thank you Sal.

These pictures were taken in the Suntree area of Florida ~Viera~ south of Cocoa &  Titusville ...

A Sandhill crane couple recently had an exciting addition to their family. When they built their nest near the water's edge it immediately drew attention of passers- by. Soon there were two eggs sitting on top of the nest and the mother on top of them.

The really curious passed by the site every morning and would stop their cars to get out and see if there were any new cranes yet. Many brought cameras of all shapes and sizes and would stand near the water for long periods of time hoping to catch a photo of the hatching.

Robert Grover, a dentist, didn't actually catch the birth but, he sure did capture some fabulous shots of the Momma, Papa and baby (the second egg never hatched). Then he put together a slide show with music that is just too good  not to share.

See you when I get back.

Hugs

Jeanie xx
