Title: Of Marriages and Betting Pools

Author: Emma (Kharma2815

Archive: My lj, the Graveshift – yes.  Anyone else, please ask

Rating: GR

Summary: I think the title pretty much sums it up.

Disclaimer: All publicly recognisable characters belong to Jerry Bruckheimer, et al.  No breach of copyright is intended and no money is being made from it.  I’m just a poor, hardworking girl who likes to take them out to play with occasionally

Reviews: What do you think?

A/N: My first fic of any type in quite a while, so I’m a little nervous.  Please be gentle with me.  I’m not too happy with the ending and the title, so any suggestions for improvement would be greatly appreciated

“Marry me.”

The words she had secretly wanted to hear for the past 15 years were spoken calmly, almost casually, but there was nothing calm or casual about the expression on his face when she turned shocked eyes to him.

“There’s a look I love to see,” he said with a smirk.  “Total confusion

“W-what did you just say?” she asked.

“There’s a look I love to see, total confusion,” he repeated knowing perfectly well that wasn’t what she wanted him to repeat.

She glared at him.  “You know what I meant!” she snapped and he smiled again, making her continue.  “And stop grinning at me.”

He walked towards her and stopped a few inches away.  He gently flipped a strand of her currently curly strawberry-blonde hair over her shoulder and leaned down to whisper in her ear.  “Marry me, Catherine.”

“Why?” she asked and he shrugged

“I don’t know, it just seems like a good idea.  We’ve been friends for 15 years, we’re both single, I love your daughter and I think she likes me.  I just figured we’re probably going to end up living in the same retirement home or something so we might as well get married now while we’re still young enough to enjoy it.”  He stopped and thought for a moment and then continued with a smile.  “Oh yes, and I’ve been in love with you from the day I walked into the French Palace and you yelled at me and called me an idiot for spilling my drink over you."

She slapped him.  “Why the hell did you wait 15 years to tell me that?” she demanded to know.

“I was scared of what you would say and having you as my friend for all this time has been enough for me, but it’s not anymore.”

She wiped away the tears that were starting to fall and looked at him, trying to see if he was serious or just joking around.  “Can I think about it?” she asked and he smiled.

“Naturally.”

They were both silent then as they went back to the paperwork they had been doing when he had sprung his surprise question on her.  In truth, she didn’t need to think about anything, she knew what the answer was from the second he had asked her.

“Okay,” she said after about 20 minutes.

“Why?” he asked, hoping he knew but needing to hear the words.

She repeated his own words back to him.  “We’ve been friends for 15 years, we’re both single, my daughter loves you and I know you love her and it’ll save us having to fork out for two retirement homes.”  She stopped and grinned.  “And I’ve loved you since you spilt your drink over me at the French Palace 15 years ago."

“Good,” he said and smiled shyly.  “Shouldn’t we be kissing right about now?” he asked and she laughed, the sound sending shivers down his spine.

“Later,” she promised.  “We’ve waited all this time, waiting a few more hours until we’ve got time to enjoy it isn’t going to kill us."

“It might,” he grumbled.

“No, it won’t,” she said firmly.  “Now, lets get back to this paperwork.  The sooner we finish here, the sooner we can do other stuff.”  That was all the incentive he needed, he finished his pile of paperwork in record time and then helped her to finish hers.

Once that was done he walked around the desk, grabbed her hand and pulled her gently out of her chair.  “The paperwork’s done,” he said quietly.

“So it is,” she said with a laugh.

He opened his mouth to say,  “We’ve got time now,” but due to the fact that she had suddenly grabbed him and covered his lips with her own, all that came out was something along the lines of “Mmff!”

Catherine let Grissom up for air after what felt like hours and they gazed at each other for a moment before starting to laugh.  “What are you laughing for?” he managed to gasp out after a few seconds.

She smiled at him.  “I think I’m still in shock.  At thebeginning of the shift we were just friends and now we’re engaged.”

“Too fast?” he asked, suddenly concerned about her reaction.

“Not fast enough,” she said with a smirk and then realised something.  “Hey!  Where’s my ring?”

“What ring?” he asked innocently.

She glared at him for a moment and poked him in the chest.  “You know perfectly well what ring, Gil Grissom.  I want an engagement ring.”

Her rubbed the spot she had just none-too-gently poked.  “Give me a break, Cath,” he groaned.  “I didn’t exactly plan this you know.  This was all kind of impulsive.”

Catherine picked up her bag from the floor by her chair and walked out of his office.  “Yeah?  Well, until I get the engagement ring of my dreams, you’re not getting any further action out of me, so you better get a move on because I’ve waited 15 years for you and I don’t think I can wait much longer.”

He caught up with her and grabbed her arm.  “How about you, me and Lindsey go out on Saturday and buy you one.”

“You, me and Lindsey?” she repeated and he nodded.

“Of course.  I need to buy an engagement gift for Lindsey as well.  After all, I’m marrying her as well as you.”

Catherine gently cupped his face in her hands and kissed him softly, totally oblivious to the fact that the rest of their team were standing Greg’s lab and watching them.  “That has to be the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to me,” she said with a smile as she grabbed his hand and led him out to break the news to Lindsey.

The four people in the lab looked at each other and grinned.  “How long do you think it’s going to be before they break the news to us?” Sara asked.

Nick shrugged.  “I have no idea, but it’s going to be so much fun tormenting them when they do eventually tell us,” he said with a smile.

Greg suddenly yelled in excitement, making Sara jump.  “What?” she snapped and he grabbed her and spun her around making her laugh even though she tried not to.

“I won, I won!”

“Won what?” she asked and looked over at Nick and Warrick.  “Guys?  What’s he talking about?”

Nick actually flushed slightly and Warrick shrugged.  “He, er, may be talking about the pool,” Nick finally said.

Sara glared at them.  “What pool?” she demanded to know.

Nick gave in with a sigh.  “The pool on when they finally get their heads out of their butts,” he said.

“So,” Sara said quietly.  “Let me get this straight.  You have got a pool going on when Catherine and Grissom get together.”

Greg swallowed nervously.  “Yeah,” he said.  “Please don’t tell Grissom, Sara.”

“Don’t worry, Greg,” she assured him.  “I’m not going to tell Grissom.”  She waited until the 3 men had relaxed slightly.  “I’m going to tell Catherine.”  Sara turned to walk out the door, only pausing long enough to throw one more comment over her shoulder.  “That is, unless you promise to let me in on the next one.”

Sara was grinning as she walked down the corridor, leaving 3 very shocked men behind.

The end.

Someone I consider a friend (even though we've never actually met) sent me this today and it really cheered me up after the horrendous day I had at work.  I hope it does the same for you.

May there always be work for your hands to do;

May your purse always hold a coin or two;

May the sun always shine on your windowpane;

May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain;

May the hand of a friend always be near you;

May God fill your heart with gladness yo cheer you.

Sorry guys (that is if anyobody is actually reading this).  I'm fairly new at all this and I'm not quite sure what I'm doing.

I'll try and fix it later, but I have to work now.

Thanks to all the C&D orders going around at the moment, I'm going to be using my own fic rating system (if ever actually have the time for writing fics) as follows:

E - Suitable for everybody

GR - Guidance recommended (might want to take a look before letting younger children see it)

T - Teenage (equivalent to PG13 or 12A ratings)

M - Mature (probably equivalent to R and 15)

AO - Adult Only (pretty much self-explanatory)

If anyone has any problem with this please let me know.

Emma

Hi everyone,

  This is my very first lj and my very first entry so I'm a little nervous.  Eventually it's going to be a place for all my shipper fics but for right now theres not a whole lot going on.

   I'm not really sure how this whole thing works, so any help would be much appreciated.  For example, what exactly are icons and how do I use them (I know I'm a total computer dunce).
