1884: Old Trafford in Manchester became the second British Test
cricket ground after the Kennington Oval when it hosted the first Test
between England and Australia.
1999: Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher suffered a
broken leg in a high-speed crash into a tyre wall during the British
Grand Prix at Silverstone. The race was won by Scotland's David
Coulthard, ahead of Ulsterman Eddie Irvine and Ralf Schumacher.

Massimo Taibi: Sold by Manchester United eight years ago today
2000: Manchester United agreed to sell goalkeeper Massimo Taibi to Reggina for £2.5million - just 10 months after splashing out £4.5million to bring him to Old Trafford. The Italian stopper suffered a series of gaffes as he conceded 11 goals in his four games for United.
2001: England wicketkeeper Alec Stewart was cleared by the England
and Wales Cricket Board and the International Cricket Council of
allegations he took money from a bookmaker for information regarding
the pitch and weather conditions in India in 1993.
2006: Liverpool announced German midfielder Dietmar Hamann had
left the club to join Bolton but hours later the player had a "change
of heart" and signed for Manchester City instead.
2007: Administrators KPMG announced a consortium headed by Ken
Bates had beaten off rival bidders to buy back Leeds for an undisclosed
sum.
