Councillor Steve Reed with Prime Minister Gordon Brown

Gordon Brown has taken over as Prime Minister – and that’s good news for Lambeth! The new Prime Minister was in Lambeth a few days before taking over as premier. To loud applause, Mr Brown told an audience of 500 people at the Oval in Kennington that education was his passion, affordable housing a key priority, and sorting out the NHS his immediate focus.

As Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown delivered continuous economic growth for ten years – the best record of any British chancellor in history. Thanks to his stewardship, Lambeth is benefiting from £200 million to rebuild and refurbish every single secondary school in the Borough, and bidding for hundreds of millions of pounds to improve council housing and build new health centres and GP surgeries.

Mr Brown held a private meeting with Lambeth Council Leader Steve Reed shortly before his speech at the Oval. He backed the Council’s plans to invest in better public housing with stronger tenant control, and offered his congratulations on how much council services have improved since voters chose Labour to replace a failed Tory-Lib Dem coalition last year.

Labour’s Steve Reed said: “I offer my congratulations to Gordon Brown as he takes over as Prime Minister. Gordon’s a great friend of Lambeth. He’s visited us several times over the past year, and it’s thanks to his steady leadership at the Treasury that we’re now able to invest so much in improving the local services that Lambeth’s residents rely on.”
