Kennington Park playground - OPEN
EXCITING NEW PLAYGROUND OPENS IN KENNINGTON
PARK
Children in Kennington are
delighted that their exciting new playground is now open in the heart of
Kennington Park. It’s already very popular with its first visitors making the
most of the summer evenings after school. Sliding into the new sandpit is great
fun, and toddlers love the new water pump, roundabout,
swings, seesaw and springers.
The red play bus is a hit too.
It celebrates London’s first motorised bus journey - from Victoria to Kennington in
1899, and the last public service of the 159 red London routemaster bus through
Kennington in December 2005.
Older children enjoy the pod
swing, climber, spinning disc and swings in their own area of the playground.
And parents have been relaxing on the lawns, with ample seating and picnic
tables. It also features an educational Children’s Wildlife area where they can
encounter special plants that encourage wildlife and learn about bugs, birds and
other insects.
The Friends of Kennington
Park
initiated the project to improve play facilities and raised funds totalling
£241,000 from Big Lottery Fund, Biffaward, London Marathon Trust, Lambeth
Council and other donor. The next stage of the Friends’ “Play in the Park”
project, being delivered in partnership with Lambeth, is the launch of a Nature
Trail in 2009 with community events and school workshops to highlight nature in
the park and improve local children’s environmental awareness.
So, with a new playground,
Kennington Park now makes an ideal day out in the summer holidays. And if the children have any energy left, the park has
lots of sports facilities to have a go at tennis, netball, football, basketball,
and cricket. Or just relax, and bring a picnic, or try out the popular park
café.

IT’S supposed to be the happiest, but soon tying the knot could also be the splashiest day of your life. The bride will have the option of swimming up the aisle if Brockwell Park Lido is granted a wedding licence. The outdoor pool in Herne Hill has applied to Lambeth council for permission to host marriages. And wedding rings could be swapped for rubber rings if the town hall approves the application.
Jeremy Lake, Lido manager, said: “We’ve had several couples say they
met and fell in love at the Lido and would like to get married here –
we thought, ‘What a great idea’.
“It’s such a unique venue. Nowhere else has the beautiful combination
of our iconic pool and the surrounding refurbished art deco buildings. "All in all it is a fun but appropriate location for a ceremony”. The pool will have to temporarily drop its strict “No Petting” rule when the groom kisses the bride.
For couples who don’t fancy going to the chap-pool and getting married
there are other unusual places to tie the knot in Lambeth. The London Eye has had a licence since April 2006. And it needn’t be just the bride wearing white. As of June 18 this year, cricket lovers can get hitched at the pavilion of the Oval cricket ground in Kennington.
Strangest of all, Dali Universe – the South Bank tribute to the Spanish
surrealist painter – has held a marriage licence since June 2006.
No one has so far opted to have their ceremony performed among his
bizarre works, although a reception was held there last year.
Just over the borough border in Wandsworth those wanting nautically
themed nuptials can book at the Battersea Barge, just off Nine Elms
Lane by the river. The De Morgan Centre in Wandsworth Town
Centre, which hosts an art collection, also had its licence reviewed in
January this year. Three pubs in the borough were also granted marriage licences. ben.clover@slp.co.uk

Così By Louis Nowra

Tues - Sat @ 7:30pm Sun @ 5:00pm Presented by Good Night Out Presents, in association with The
White Bear Theatre Club
Set in the early 70’s, Così is
the touching and hilarious story of Lewis, a fresh-faced theatre director, in
his first job: directing patients in a Melbourne mental asylum in Mozart’s Così
fan Tutte. But no one, including ringleader Roy (Mark
Little), can sing or speak Italian. Meanwhile, the pressure on Lewis from
his university friends to organise Australia’s largest Vietnam War protest makes
him question where true madness lies: inside or outside the asylum.
Louis Nowra is one of
Australia’s most important and prolific living playwrights. Award-winning,
semi-autobiographical and critica
"Nowra has written a terrific play
about theatre, madness, illusion, sanity, life; it’s a big splendidly Australian
epic..." –Frank Gauntlett, Telegraph

It all goes flat for Big Yellow

Trouble in store: Big Yellow
It all goes flat for Big Yellow
09.07.08
Self-storage
warehouses operator Big Yellow today said total occupancy of its units
has been flat in the first quarter because of the slower property
market. "What benefits Big Yellow is any sort of movement in
the market - with people buying, selling or renovating and needing
self-storage, so obviously it is closely tied to the housing market" a
spokesman said. Average occupancy of all stores in the quarter
was 1,813,000 sq ft, against 1,822,000 sq ft in the same quarter last
year, although there was a slight increase from the March quarter.
Income rose 4% to £14.5 million from the previous quarter. The firm opened a new store in Kennington during the quarter, bringing its total to 48.
