Feeling Worried
Can we rely on our borough council to protect our heritage? We seem to have a crazy situation whereby our taxes pay for our heritage sites to be protected and repaired as necessary through our government. Our borough council is required to ensure this happens under the direction of English Heritage (or whatever they have decided to call themselves now). Our curator of archaeology, based at the Castle Museum is reliant on the borough council for his job and for museum service funding - so he isn't going to rock the boat is he? He is going to speak when he is spoken to and then he is only going to say what it is expedient to say. Our local archaeologists are heavily reliant on getting their work from the borough council - so they aren't going to rock the boat either, are they? So, what happens when our heritage sites are threatened by neglect or property speculator attack? Who have we got to defend our heritage? It seems that all we have is our borough council, whose duty it is to protect our heritage. But when did you last hear of them taking the initiative? So, it comes down to individuals from the general public, who have no reliance on the council for their livelihood, to write to the newspapers who, in turn, do a splendid job with embarrassing the string pullers into taking action. Is that the way it should be do you think?
