Today is a bit warmer and we had quite a pleasant drive to the doctor's surgery.

It has been quite a time since I saw Kim - the diabetic nurse . She has just come back from a cruise around the Balkans and was full of the joys of spring and chatting about it.

She was pleased with my blood pressure reading and we chatted about my diabetes.  I showed her my testing machine which keeps records everytime I take blood and scanning through them, she says that, on the whole, they are very good.  We did talk about my reaction to my getting the first year all-clear and how I was surprised at first how it hit me and how I fell into a black hole.  She said that this is natural and has had the same thing happen with her own father.  That is why I always like this nurse, she is easy to talk to, very understanding, knows me very well and always makes allowances for my anxiety and fear of all things medical.

She then checked my feet.  She has done this before just by feeling the warmth of them and feeling the strength of the pulse.  This time I had to close my eyes and she used a pricker but only very lightly.  I had to tell her where she was pricking at four different spots on both feet.  I was able to describe them all and she was delighted.  It means that I have no signs of diabetic neuropathy.

She tells me that I do not have to have the diabetic blood test or the urine test until the beginning of October.  Hurrah! At last I can have a quiet month (fingers crossed) without having to worry.   I should have seen her weeks ago but first I hurt my back just doing something mundane and then Mike and I went down with awful bugs and then Kim went on holiday, so this has been hanging over me and niggling away at the back of my mind for quite some time.  It is nice to get it behind me.

So, you can imagine I am more than somewhat relieved.  We had a little drive around afterwards but could not find anything to photograph that we have not done before.

Becky and Dean have gone to Legoland with the boys and do not have to do everything in one day as they will be staying overnight in a hotel and visiting Legoland again tomorrow.  I hope they are having the reasonable weather that we are.  The boys are going to love it.

It was so sad to hear of that awful plane crash in Spain and to know that so many perished including children and babies.  So many grieving families.  God bless them.

Now to the results of the poll.

Krissy was right in her guess about what the top disliked chore would be :-

Ironing 37 17%
Cleaning Bathroom 25 12%
Weeding The Garden 19 9%
Cleaning Windows 17 8%
Changing Bed Linen 16 8%
Washing Floors 13 6%
Washing/Polishing Vehicle 13 6%
Dusting/Polishing 12 6%
Laundry 12 6%
Painting/Decorating 11 5%
Clearing Out Drawers 10 5%
Mowing The Lawn 9 4%
Washing Up 8 4%
Hoovering 4 2%
Preparing Vegetables 3 1%
Cooking 3 1%
212

The majority of us hate ironing and cleaning the bathroom! I was surprised to see weeding the garden score so high. I thought that would be lower on the list.  So interesting to see the results and to have 212 votes was very heartening. My sincere thanks to all who voted.

I have a couple of ideas for further polls but I would also be grateful for your thoughts.  Have a ponder, what would you like to see a poll  about?  You can either leave your choice in comments or send me an e-mail so that others do not have any inkling of what might be coming up.

I will save all your answers and some of your choices will be popping up from time to time.

Well, lunchtime now.  I have a very nice salad roll sitting here waiting for me with a nice cup of tea.  Then.....................housework!

Oh, before I go, J-Land is 5 years old today

I hope your week has been going well.

On Monday France lost 10 servicemen in Afghanistan with 22 more injured.

We must remember that it is not just UK and USA servicemen over there.  Many other countries also have troops fighting in rough conditions against the Taliban.

Behind every serviceman, of whatever nationality, waits a family and friends, worrying, watching the news, looking forward to a joyous homecoming and dreading receiving bad news.

The loss of a loved one is a devastating thing but to have young  husbands, sons/daughters die in a "war" makes it worse.  We have seen many scenes of burials, distraught families and lives left altered forever.

My thoughts go to the families and friends of those Frenchmen who have lain down their lives.  May they rest in peace and may their families find what comfort they can.

My thoughts are also with the family of another British soldier who was killed yesterday.

We had the family over yesterday as it was Dean's Birthday and really enjoyed it as always. Dean just likes a quiet  time as he has never been a fan of birthdays and does not like any fuss.  Afterwards they went out to have a meal together.

The weather remains more like October.  It is horrible to hear such strong winds in what is supposed to be our summer and the outlook for the rest of the month is not good either.

Mike had a little surprise when he took the dogs out on Sunday.  It is not often you see the cab of an American Freightliner over here, certainly not in our part of the country.  However, there it was, parked in the next road and covered in Birthday stickers and decorations.  We can only assume that it was arranged as a surprise treat.   Him indoors was obviously very interested as that used to be his job.  He drove forty foot oil tankers for Mobil.  He says he would hate to be on the road these days, although he does miss his C.B. radio.  Anyway, he could not resist taking a shot (you will gather he always has his camera with him).

Photobucket

He often takes the dogs to a certain place because they can splash in the water and he was telling me about a house that is in the middle of nowhere so I asked him to get a couple of photos.

Photobucket

The next photo shows the house again and the other building is the boathouse which belongs to it.

Photobucket

It must at least be a haven for wildlife

Photobucket

We were very surprised a couple of days after he took these shots to see in the paper that this property is for sale.

A staggering  £1,500,000 !!!  It does have five bedrooms, a gardener's cottage, ten acres of land (which I suppose is really reflected in the price) a swimming pool and a large conservatory.  I must say, it would be a bit too remote for me even if I had the money (that is never likely to happen) although the views must be great with the sun and moon reflected on the water and, like I  said, a great place for birdlife.

I wonder what the insurances costs?  We have just changed our household insurer because we were getting ripped off by the old one.  One of the first questions our new insurer asked was "is your properly within a quarter of a mile of any water?" followed up by "have you ever suffered flood damage?"  Had we said yes,  (and no, we are not) the premiums would have rocketed.

Maybe with the rain we have had last summer, during the winter and now this summer they have decided to upsticks and move on.   Anyway for a keen ornithologist it must be paradise.

I shall be posting the results of the poll tomorrow.  In the meantime you can all start guessing which chore came out as the most disliked lol!

Love,

I have another poll for you and there are some questions that gentlemen can answer as well.

Obviously I cannot list every single chore we have to do at various times so I have just come up with a general assortment.

It will be interesting to see which is the most disliked. Anyway, I hope you will enjoy taking part and you can pick more than one answer.

As for me it has to be washing up, cleaning the bathroom and ironing.

Today it is blowing an absolute gale.  I was reading the paper this morning and there was an article about the weather saying that this was a tradition British summer and that people are only moaning because we have been accustomed to hot summers the last few years and have forgotten what summers used to be like here.  I beg to disagree.  Yes, we did have cool wet summers but we never had the high winds that we are experiencing now in days gone by. The trees are almost bending double.

I have some local views to share with you today taken by him indoors on his daily jaunt out with the dogs.

Photobucket

This is an old mill where in days gone by huge barges powered by sail would moor up to unload their cargo of grain.  It is now a highly popular antiques centre.

Photobucket

The small weir just across from the antiques centre.

I love the way the plants are growing in the above picture and the algae on the old brickwork.  This place has changed little over the centuries.  The only alteration is that now  it is a place where people live on converted barges and houseboats and  no longer a place of industry.

I do wish many more of our local historic buildings had been protected and saved but then time moves on, things are constantly changing and what is new today will one day be old, if the structures have been built well enough.

I am happy that this ancient backwater you have seen remains little altered.

A day of sunshine and showers today, well more showers than anything else and quite a strong wind.

I promised  you the results of the poll on what scares you the most so I am posting those results today.  The majority voted for loss of a loved one.  I thought that would come out on top.  It shows how dependent we are on other people, just how strong the power of love is and that we are so very human.

I was surprised that heights came in second.  What is it about heights?  I cannot stand them myself but with so many people flying today I thought it might come lower down the poll.   I know I cannot explain my fear of heights but I have always had it.

Anyway, without further ado, here is the result of the poll which got 197 votes.

Loss Of A Loved One 33 17%
Heighs 24 12%
Illness 20 10%
Confined Spaces 20 10%
Death 18 9%
The Dentist 17 9%
Spiders 15 8%
Creepy Crawlies 12 6%
Horror Movies 12 6%
Snakes 9 5%
The Dark 9 5%
Being Left Alone 8 4%
197

Quite a few left comments and some interesting fears were to be found amongst them -

Dreams, being deeply cut (wounded), loss of control, balloons, fireworks, thunderstorms, clowns, people dressed in animal costumes, ladders, identical twins, wooden spoons and lolly sticks.

I must admit I have never heard of a fear of identical twins before nor of wooden spoons or sticks.  I wonder what the names for these fears would be?  I can add another one.  I always feared store mannequins.  I do not know why but whenever I walked by one I always felt faint, my heart would race and I would get a prickling down my spine and yet I never had a problem with waxworks.  It was only those store dummies.

It would seem that fear is a strange emotion and can take so very many forms.

I hope that you enjoyed taking part.  If you like me running polls, I am more than happy to do them from time to time.  Let me know what you think.  Maybe I should do a poll asking you if you like me posting polls lol.

Have a good day everyone and don't walk under any ladders.

Here we are at the start of another week. Already August seems to by flying by.  The weather today is a little brighter and a little warmer.

Last week I put a web tracker on my journal and I must say it makes fascinating reading.

I was surprised to see I have readers in France. Well, when I say readers I do not know if they are just coming out of curiosity or by accident but one of them does seem to be regular visitor - bonjour!

I just checked a few minutes ago and I have a visitor from........................................Singapore!

It probably helps that I have put my blog on Technorati and now use tags at the bottom of my entries, using a few key words as to what the entry is about.  People from all over the world use Technorati to search for journals to read.  I would encourage everyone to put their journal on there unless it is private of course.  It is no good with private journals as people cannot access.

I can only give you an abbreviated glimpse here

France flagspacerTours Centre France 7 4.0

France flagspacerSceaux Ile-de-France France 2 1.2

These are only the very recent statistics.  The first figure is the number of hits on the journal and the figures after that are percentages.

It is certainly very interesting and also gives me lots of graphs, day by day, month totals, city locations, a detailed world visitors map and much more.

I think we all get visitors who do not comment so it is very nice to know just where your journal is being read and where your hits are coming from.

I certainly wish I had done it before now.

Mike has just gone out with the dogs and is popping into the doctors as I am long overdue for my bp and blood sugar check.  Hopefully the appointment will be this week.  I have had to put it off until now as first I had a back bad and could harden straighten (about three weeks ago) and then when my back got better and  just as I was about to make the appointment, we both went down with an awful bug.  I only have medication for a few more days so I need an appointment this week.  Fingers crossed please that all will go well for me.  I have had more than my fair share of stress.  I do not need more.

Well, I have spent far too long on here today already. I have been busy doing something important and also helping somebody out with something.  I need to get my act together now and get some exercise by doing some housework.

Mike just got back, cannot get an appointment with right nurse until the 21st.  Oh well, such is life.

Have a great week everyone.  Oh, I shall be closing the poll tomorrow and will publish the full results.

I would again like to thank Jude for choosing my journal in her Guest Editor's Picks on Magic Smoke.  This was the first time I had ever been chosen and it is a nice feeling.

The poll is doing well, quite a lot of votes.  It is still open and probably will be until Monday morning, so you still have plenty of time to cast your vote if you have not already done so. (See previous entry)

It seems that Autumn is setting in really fast here.  A couple of nights ago we had a storm that lasted for four hours. I have never seen lightning like it and the rain was torrential.  The following day we had another storm. Today it is very windy, cold and overcast and this is still summer or supposed to be!

The family were over yesterday and we had lots of fun as always. Less than a month now until Nathan starts school.  Oh, how I will miss him. I have been so used to having him here a couple of times a week.  Now it will only be some weekends and holidays.

I do not really have a lot to write about today as it has all been very quiet here.  I do have a couple more photos of cactus flowers to share with you.

This first little one has a flower stem and bloom bigger than itself!

With the onset of the overcast weather and the temperatures dropping so much I think that will be the last of them flowering for this year unless we get a late heatwave.

I need to get some housework done, then I think I will get comfy and start reading my new book.

Wishing you all a happy weekend.

And remember, do not miss out on the fun and have a laugh by visiting -  Make 'Em Laugh!
