Day 5 of smiling research (11/5/05).  I continued to smile more during the group lesson with my literacy group.  Children were lively and looking for reasons not to do their work.  As lesson went on I felt less positive although the smiling did help to stop me feeling too negative.  I had to stop smiling to settle them down and I was glad when the lesson came to an end.

Day 4 of smiling research 9/5/05.  Children seemed focused today and I was relaxed.  I smiled as much as possible.  As the lesson went on their behaviour became more disruptive.  They lost their focus and I had to stop smiling and look more serious in order to settle them down.

Day 3 of my smiling research 5/5/05 .  My literacy group were quite lively today but I smiled regularly while giving them their activity instructions.  They remained quite lively throughout the lesson and ignored my requests on a few occasions.  I was using positive reinforcement strategies while talking to them about their work but I felt that they were not taking me seriously.

Day 2 (3/5/05) and I smiled more during literacy hour today.  The children were already in a cooperative mood so it is difficult to tell whether it had an effect on them but it continued to keep me feeling more relaxed.

Day 1 of my smiling research (25/4/05).  I decided to smile more during numeracy hour while supporting Green Group.  Even before we sat down child A tipped over a container of counters.  This child is attention seeking and can create feelings of frustration.  He is actually responsible for this research taking place as it was his behaviour that made me think of it in the first place.  I smiled and asked him to put the counters back.  I continued to praise him and smile and gradually the counters were returned to their container.  I felt positive and calm.

I continued to smile more during the lesson and continued to feel calm but a question I need to ask is:

Did my calm mood mean that I tolerated more disturbances?

It was the 2nd activity of week 3 today.  I gave the children 4 pictures from Cinderella and asked them to put them into the correct order.  They all talked about the pictures and what was happening.  They all had an opinion on the ugly sisters.  They mainly remained focused when sticking the pictures in order and putting the words of a sentence in the correct order.  Three of the children got restless towards the end of the activity today and 3 of them remained focused and finished the activity.

On Friday I carried out the first activity of week 3 of my action enquiry.  The big book we will be using next week is Cinderella.  I read the story to them which was a version written by Stan Cullimore.  The children answered questions and asked questions also.  After reading the story we talked about it and then I asked the children what they would like to make. I gave them a choice of making a magic wand or a picture of one of the characters from the story.  They all decided to do a picture although one of them did a picture of a magic wand.  The children had coloured card, pencils, pastels and glitter to use.  Once I had given out all the materials I tried to keep my input to the minimum in order to give the children maximum opportunity to talk.  They chatted about their drawings and the colours of pastel and glitter they were using.  One child liked the feel of the glitter. He said it was 'all sprinkly'.

Our class had its assembly this morning.  The parents came to watch and it all went quite well.  This meant that our lessons were disrupted and instead of literacy the children did ICT.  My class teacher was happy for me to take my group and carry out my planned lesson but I still had some children I needed to read with because assembly rehearsals had eaten into this time and the children in my group were eager to do ICT. The fact that I am doing an action enquiry was not a good enough reason to ask the children to miss out on something the rest of the class was doing.  It is one of the difficulties that can be encountered and the decision made has to have the children's interests at heart.

Mood:  Quiet

I carried out the third activity in this week's action enquiry.  The children had to put the words of three sentences about the big book into the correct order.  I concentrated on encouraging the children to identify words by their initial phonemes and to think about where the word with the full-stop goes.  The children were using the card that they sequenced pictures from the story on.  I gave them one sentence at a time for them to order and glue into place.  Initially it took the children a while to settle down but once they understood what they were required to do they got on with it quite enthusiastically.  They talked about the pictures and what was happening and read out the single words and then the sentences.  During the carpet session one of the children put up her hand to tell the class teacher a thought she had had about the story.

Music:  Eastenders is on the television

Yesterday I carried out the 2nd AE activity of week 2.  The children listened to the teacher read the story (The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear).  I had prepared 3 coloured pictures from the book for each child to sequence.  We talked about the story and the sequence of events.  Each child was keen to talk and were confident about their version of the story.  The children then stuck their pictures onto coloured card.  All sequenced the pictures correctly with minimum support.  When the children were listening to the story read by the teacher I could hear them retelling parts of the story.  This shows the advantage of starting their literacy week on the Friday before.  The children were already familiar with the story and felt able to contribute.  At the end of the lesson the children finished their mouse masks that they started to make on Friday.  They were all so pleased and showed some of the other children and the class teacher.  Today they showed these masks in assembly.
