Professional cleaning: why we use Green Products

I personally have been in the cleaning trade for over 18 years, first working for a small independent and then working for a large well known cleaning franchise for over 12 years before setting up my own company. Thinking back I can’t believe the chemicals we used and the way we used them. We where using highly volatile petroleum based cleaning agents, strong acids and very high alkaline based cleaning agents on a daily basis, not only did these products have potential health risks for us using them but possibly for the client too. I can remember on many occasions where I had head aches, rashes and even on one occasion having to have hospital treatment for severe chemical burns.

When I decided to form my own company, I decided to revue the cleaning processes and the chemicals used. I felt I no longer wanted to use these potentially harmful products on a personal basis, so we began to look for alternatives. First of all, we cut down on the amount of petroleum based products we used and altered the way we cleaned many soft furnishings, we then began to source and test naturally derived cleaning agents.

First, I was sceptical about the effectiveness of theses natural cleaning agents probably because I have always used chemical based products and have been happy with the results obtained. We started to test micro splitters for our carpet cleaning services, these products are naturally derived from sustainable sources, contain no chemicals, enzymes or potentially harmful ingredients and are biodegradable. We have had to change the processes we use as these products work in a slightly different way to chemicals but you soon learn to adjust your methods. I must say I was so surprised by my findings. Not only do these products have safer personal and environmental properties they clean to a better standard, carpets and upholstery I would have previously thought could not be cleaned now come up like new. There have been many instances where in the past we would have had to have used strong chemicals to solve many cleaning problems, we can now use these natural water based cleaning agents on most cleaning jobs, if we do have to use a solvent cleaning agent we use solvents derived from citrus oils. We now make sure all our cleaning products are biodegradable and safe for all.

Yes we have had to make many changes to the way we think and carry out our services, but this can only benefit us who use cleaning products everyday and our clients who can be assured that no chemical based products are being used in their homes or businesses.
