Feeling Hopeful

Celebrations

I'm having to revert to the nuisance way of doing a journal entry - sending it to myself as an email then copy/pasting.  I've spent ages and tried 3 times today to do a direct entry but no, I get cut off every time, so I'll try it this way and hope AOL will let me insert photos 'after the fact'.  No good putting them in my 'message to self' because all you'll get is the dreaded blank boxes.  (big swallow) Here goes............

First of all many thanks Marie for the lovely "You sparkle my day" award.  I'll put it in my side bar as soon as I'm allowed access!!   Truly though, I know almost everybody gets them in the end but I'm always thrilled to bits that someone thought of ME.  I'm also always amazed that there are people who keep coming back to my journal.  You're lovely, the lot of you!

It was my mum's 80th birthday on Friday 22nd Feb and on that day mum, sis and great grandson number 1 came to our house for lunch.  On the Sunday mum hosted a lunch party at a (nearly) local hotel to which as many as possible of her family between Birmingham and Middlesbrough came.  Not a huge number but she was thrilled to bits to have all her family around one table, even her two great grandsons although they are still too young, at 12 months and 15 months, to understand what the fuss was about.  Great grandchild number 3 is expected in October.  Nobody knits for babies any more do they?  Just a thought - hey don't look at me, I can't knit anyway!   After lunch it was back to my sister's house, which is only a stone's throw from the restaurant, for champagne and cake.  I suppose it is a bit conceited of me to say so but I was quite proud of the way the cake and decoration of it turned out.  It was a long oval rich fruit cake, which I made last September, covered with marzipan and pale lemon sugarpaste.  The floral decoration was arum lilies and winter jasmine which I made from sugar and bear grass.  The stems were bound together with dark kiwi green satin and voile ribbon, the idea being that she could lift off the decoration and keep it in her cabinet as a keepsake.

So that was quite a busy weekend and we were still scraping mum down off the ceiling on Thursday!  That led nicely up to this past Sunday - Mothers' Day.  Well, mum would do her nut if we started giving her cards for that and she objects to vastly inflated flower prices (Asda had bunches of carnations with a bit of green in:  24 QUID!!!) so she came here for the day.  Days here always seem to involve a lot of eating though - not good for my slim and sylphlike (not) figure.  My sister and brother and their respective spouses had gone off to Dublin for the weekend (university reunion) so in among the Guinness and the Whiskey visits I shouldn't think Mothers' Day would have got a look in!

I was absolutely discombobnified at mum's birthday to be asked by my brother's wife to make a birthday cake for their daughter's 30th birthday next Monday (10/3).  It's all go isn't it!  But I was really quite touched by that request because in the 30-odd years they've been married they have never before acknowledged that I might know something they don't!  Anyway, she said she just wanted a little sponge cake just as it was a special birthday.  So I've made an 8" chocolate sponge, which is in the freezer as we speak, and over the past weekend I've made a large open rose and a small one with some leaves and twigs and little white blossoms.  The cake won't be ready until Sunday morning so I'll show you next time.

Our poor little Sally has had a bit of a poorly leg, most unlike her.  I think she must have skidded when charging round the garden.  How many times have I told her she should start behaving with a bit of old lady decorum, but does she listen?  For a couple of days she was limping around on 3 legs.  Strangely enough there didn't seem to be anything wrong with it.  She didn't mind Keith poking about at it or looking at her paws.  It's cleared up now but it's awful when you think they might be in pain.

So lovely catching up with you Angie.  I miss your posts when you don't do one for a time.  And my sweet lady you are so deserving of a you sparkle my day award as you are always leaving me your lovely comments and you always make me smile when I read your posts.  A post from you is like a visit with a long lost friend.  :-)  Looks like mum had a lovely birthday and as for the cake, well my dear it is just gorgeous!  YOU do ever such a lovely job. I so wish you could do a cake for me.  That would be such a lovely gift.  Anyways, too far away I know, but one can dream.  I bet your niece's cake will be just as gorgeous, knowing you and your very wonderful decorating talents!
Hope your dear Sally's leg is back to normal soon. It is such a worry when our beloved pets are ill or hurting as they cannot tell us what's wrong.
    love,
    Marie

Oh dear Angie, I can`t open your photos, I`ll have to try again. :o(  I`ve emailed my entries to myself as a failsafe because AOL in its wisdom has a way of closing down on me just as I`m about to save an entry...grrr!  I`m glad your Mum had a lovely birthday and that your cake impressed everyone. I`ll bet it tasted delicious, it certainly sounded yummy and I absolutely love marzipan. 24 quid for flowers, talk about a rip off!

    Love Sandra xxxx
