References to the proportion of gentry as J.P.s

A couple of months ago, I came across references in the works of the late  Gerald Aylmer and Lawrence Stone to the proportion of early modern gentry who could hope to become Justices of the Peace.  (They were very low.) Unfortunately, I did not write these down and now cannot find them despite extensive searches amongst my books.  Is anyone able to help me ?
