More Age Discrimination set in stone

Here is another example of age discrimination -drafted into regulations - which prevents over 66's from obtaining benefits that under 66's can qualify for by setting an arbritary age barrier.

Look below at the sentence I have purpled - taken from the Independent Living Fund website. If you agree with me that discrimination against age in these cases, (with the government's full permission), takes away older persons' human rights as citizens of this country, please email the Commission on Equality and Human Rights and tell them what you think.  I did.

"Who is eligible?

You can apply to the Independent Living Fund if you:

  • are over 16 and under 66
  • already get or able to get social services support to the value of at least £200 a week (this can include direct payments and/or services from your local authority, such as day-centre placement)
  • receive or are entitled to the care component of the Disability Living Allowance at the highest rate
  • live alone or with people who cannot fully meet your care needs
  • are at risk of entering residential care (or are currently in residential care and wish to leave and live independently)
  • are capable of living in the community for at least six months
  • have capital of less than £18,500 (includes a partner's or civil partner's capital)
  • have a care package that costs less than £785.00 per week (once your own income has been taken into account) "

So that first qualification, based on age, rules out any hope of benefiting from a fund that a younger person with the exactly the same disability can benefit from!

The elderly have definitely been used as soft targets!

But who has paid the most in taxes and National Insurance, a lad or lass of 17 years or a person of 80 years?

Please contact that Quango, the Commission on Equality and Human rights and add your protest that this matter has not yet been dealt with urgently.   What is the point of the government forming a Commission on Equality and Human Rights if it is, itself, not treating people with equality because of ageism?

It is no good for the government to make laws to compel the citizenry, particularly small businesses and corporations, to treat everyone equally and not to discriminate on account of race, culture, religion, or age if the government itself continues to carry on with its own age discrimination.

It is time the UK Government set its own house in order before it compels employers (quite rightly) not to bar workers merely because of their age.

Good health to you!   Bettineolive@AOL.com
