The Man From Auntie Says Yes...

...Alright: maybe.

I sent a copy of Divine Rites, now called THY WILL BE DONE, to The Writer's Room (amongst other places) about six months ago. I made a few enquiries about what happened to it, but the report was expected back "that week" or "soon" and then The Reader in question had "unavoidable delays". Happens. At the end of the day and as I've written before, The Writers' Room is a fantastic resource, not to mention one of those rare commodities - a search for UK writing talent! - so I don't mind waiting, however long it takes.

I got this back on Saturday:

"This stylistic, dark supernatural thriller sees Michael Keen - a man haunted by the death of his young daughter - become entwined with the shady Mark Jones and embark on a voyage of self discovery. The writer displays a talent for vivid and detailed depictions of the world her characters inhabit. I was reminded very much of David Lynch's TWIN PEAKS in terms of both tone and content. The dialogue is brimful of subtle and clever wordplay: the recurring motif of "You know what will happen" works especially well in all its guises.

Characterisation is reassuringly original across the board. I was particularly impressed with the way in which peripheral characters such as "Tattooed Man" and "Albino" were drawn. There are many natty touches such as the "Casino" which is in fact a hell-esque subterrania. But for me the writer's commitment to creating the world of the script sometimes overshadowed the unfurling of the narrative. However, there is much to reccommend here and I would certainly like to see the writer's next work."

After a difficult week last week for a variety of reasons, this was a welcome boost. Apparently, they want to "keep abreast" of my writing career (always raises an eyebrow in my childish mind that expression!) and want me to send them my next script as a solicited work. I'm not getting too excited, since I've been here once before with The Writer's Room about eighteen months ago: after receiving some excellent feedback and a further script invite, I sent them my solicited script; they sort of liked it, but didn't ask to see another. Not getting that close but no cigar again, so Ihave several peeps crawling all over another of my specs and ripping it to shreds before I send it. But we'll just have to wait and see.

It's not all over for DR though hopefully: it's possibly my strongest and I have got some mild interest from a couple of other sources, though can't write about them for fear of THE DREADED WRITER'S JINX. Will keep you updated as and when I know.

What are you up to?

That's EXACTLY the problem I'd have had too! Commiserations, I'm sure you'll have it licked soon.

the deadline was extended so there's still time. The whole gumball thing lends itself to the 'caper' genre (more than anything) -  not really my cuppa. I'm still trying to give it a go.  Right now characters - strong but story - weak.
